    Phone Triage Nurse 


    Supervision Received: Reports directly to the Clinical Coordinator.

    Typical Physical Demands: Requires prolonged sitting, some bending, stooping and stretching. Requires eye-hand coordinator and manual dexterity sufficient to operate a computer, telephone and other office equipment. Requires vision and hearing to normal range. Requires working under stressful conditions or working irregular hours. Requires occasional exposure to communicable diseases or bodily fluids.

    Typical working Conditions: May have exposure to communicable diseases, biohazard substances, medicinal preparations, and other conditions common to medical environment.

    Examples of Duties: (This list may not include all of the duties assigned.)

    • Review daily provider patient schedule with Clinical Coordinator and clinical team to prioritize triage to plan for efficient flow of patient care.
    • Triage daily patient phone calls in order of priority to ensure acute care needs are addressed by appropriate health care professional in a timely manner.
    • Perform medication prior authorizations.
    • Assist patients in scheduling preventative services.
    • Assist with patient education as needed.
    • Assist in contacting patients with abnormal lab/test results and schedule follow up as ordered by the providers when requested.
    • Assist clinical staff as needed to avoid interruption of delivery of services to patients.
    • Counsel patients regarding lab tests, medications, procedures, etc. as requested by physicians.
    • Schedule referrals and appointments for specialized testing and procedures as requested.
    • Performs general nursing care to patients. Administers prescribed medications and treatments in accordance with clinical standards.
    • Assist in orientation process of new employees. Assist with ordering stock supplies and medications as needed.
    • Works at maintaining a good rapport and a cooperative working relationship with providers, staff and patients.
    • Maintains working knowledge of payer requirements.
    • Attends required meetings and participates in committees as requested.
    • Follow and perform all OSHA and CLIA requirements.
    • Maintains strict patient confidentiality and protected heath information (PHI) in a manner consistent with HIPAA.
    • Bilingual staff may be called upon to interpret if needed provided the employee speaks the needed language and is available to interpret.
    • Performs related work as required.

    Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

    Knowledge of the principles and skills needed for nursing to provide patient care and treatment. Knowledge of examination, diagnostic, and treatment room procedures. Knowledge of medications and their effects on patients. Knowledge of patient education principles to develop a self-care program. Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment. Skill in administering a variety of treatments and medications as directed. Skill in using various types of equipment for examination procedures. Skill in taking vital signs. Skill in maintaining records and writing reports. Skill is establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, and the public. Ability to maintain quality control standards. Ability to recognize problems and recommend solutions. Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations. Ability to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures. Ability to communicate clearly. Ability to identify and prioritize acute situations from routine non-employment patient care needs.


    High School Diploma or GED

    Graduation from an accredited school of practical nursing


    Thorough knowledge of medical specialty field

    Minimum one year clinical office experience preferred

    Electronic Health Records experience preferred


    Valid current state of Florida license to practical nursing

    CPR certification required (or ability to obtain certification within six months of employment)
